In his days in Nuenen, Vincent van Gogh was ridiculed by local dignitaries. Now van Gogh is embraced by their descendants to keep the tourist industry going. In this work, the infamous painting the ‘Potato Eaters’ is represented in an installation. The inanimate aspects of the painting are recreated in three dimensions. The aesthetics refer to the cultural bankruptcy of the local middle classes: LED lights, neon colours, printed posters, and empty vitrines. In the painting, the subjects eat potatoes whilst drinking coffee. In the installation an aroma diffuser spreads the scent of fresh coffee, mimicking Van Gogh who added the coffee element in order to fulfill the composition of the painting.
