Property of Illusion / Illusion of Property

Op een sokkel ligt een plaat grafiet met daarop een klein Boeddhahoofd uitgevoerd in gum. De installatie is geïnspireerd op een Boeddhahoofd uit het Victoria & Albert Museum in London, maar verwijst ook naar de commodificatie en commercialisering van spiritualiteit, die voor Thomasse wordt belichaamd door de kitschboeddha’s die mensen in hun vensterbank zetten. Thomasse maakte de sokkel uit het V&A één op één na en plaatste daarop de kleine Boeddha die elk moment uitgegumd kan worden. Een spel met thema’s als verlichting, verdwijning, illusie en bezit.

On top of a pedestal rests a graphite plate with a small rendition of a Buddha head from a rubber eraser. The installation is inspired by a Buddha head at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Thomasse made the pedestal one-­to-­one to the original and placed a small Buddha on it, which can be erased at any time. It is a play with enlightenment, disappearance, illusion and possession.
