Toe-eigening van kosmische toevalligheden

Het verzoek van Erwin Thomasse om iets te schrijven over zijn werk, en meer specifiek over het werk ‘no. 45’ (een handige kruising tussen het getal 45 en een hakenkruis – zo’n typische dubbelzinnige streetwise beeldvondst waar Thomasse patent op heeft) bracht bij mij een opmerkelijke gebeurtenis van een tijdje terug in herinnering. Of eigenlijk, het gesprek dat ik met Erwin over ‘no. 45’ had, en over de veranderende betekenis van begrippen als auteurschap, toe-eigening en plagiaat in het tijdperk van razendsnelle beeldverspreiding, deed dat.

Appropriations and cosmic coincidences

Erwin Thomasse’s request for me to write something about his work, and more specifically about the work ‘no. 45’ (a clever cross between the number 45 and the swastika – one of those typically ambiguous and streetwise visual trouvailles that Thomasse so naturally produces) reminded me of a remarkable occurence some time ago. Or to put it more precisely, I was reminded of it because of the conversation I had with Erwin about ‘no. 45’ and the changing meaning of things like authorship, appropriation and plagiarism in the era of the extremely fast dispersion of images.
